Audience members got on their bikes – to power an open-air cinema.

Up to 200 people turned up to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park at West Bretton for a unique event to mark the countdown to the Tour de France Grand Depart.

Organisers asked for volunteers to climb aboard the special bikes to provide electricity to power the film.

The Cycle Cinema at dusk on Friday showed an animated comedy, The Triplets of Belleville, on a large screen with the backdrop of the sculpture park’s landscape.

The French film tells the story of Madame Souza whose grandson was kidnapped during the Tour de France.

The woman teams up with the Belleville Sisters, an aged song-and-dance team from the days of legendary dancer Fred Astaire, to rescue the grandson.

Members of the audience had the choice of sitting back and enjoying the film – or hopping on a saddle to produce pedal power.

Another unusual cycling-themed event is planned at the sculpture park.

Bicycle Ballet’s Strictly Cycling – a form of dancing on bikes – will be performed on June 28.

Almost 50 events have been selected to be officially part of the Yorkshire Festival of Cycling.
