HUDDERSFIELD Civic Society has a new chairman.

Chris Marsden was elected to the role at the group’s annual general meeting.

As coordinator of Huddersfield Gem, Chris has championed the cause of the Queensgate Market Hall and made its unique architecture known to an international audience.

An amateur photographer and specialist in public art, he led a series of tours of the town’s art during Civic Societies Week last year.

He has served the society in various roles, including newsletter editor and listing and conservation officer.

Also elected was new vice-chairman David Wyles, who is well-known for his guides to walking tours of the architecture of Huddersfield.

The meeting was followed by a talk by Guy Denton, of Whitelaw Turkington Landscape Architects. The firm designed the redevelopment of St George’s Square.

The society’s next meeting is at 7.45pm on April 18 at Kirklees College.
