STUDENTS from overseas are adding a cosmopolitan touch to Huddersfield.

Kirklees Mayor Clr Barbara Allonby celebrated their arrival with a Huddersfield Town Hall reception.

About 400 new students from outside the European Union are descending on Huddersfield University for the start of its new academic year.

About 80 countries are represented, bringing a welcome multicultural touch to the town, said Graham Wood, head of the university's international office.

The recruitment level for the foreign students is 40% up on last year.

University staff have attended education fairs abroad to enlist students.

About 600 international students are now attending Huddersfield University.
