PLANS for a new school have come under fire from an MP.

Kirklees Council wants to move Whitcliffe Road Infants School at Cleckheaton to a site on Bradford Road, Rawfolds.

But Batley and Spen Labour MP Mike Wood feels it would be better to put the school on the former "feast ground" in St Peg Lane.

He is producing a plan for a school in St Peg Lane, in a bid to stir Kirklees into action.

He said: "This is an attempt to demonstrate that where there's the will there is a way to find a good site for the school.

"The Rawfolds site is totally inappropriate for a school.

"Apart from the very poor location, traffic problems and contamination from previous industrial use of the site, Kirklees will have to build a two-storey school to make it fit this site - and no-one builds two-storey nursery schools any more," said Mr Wood.

The school has about 200 pupils aged from three to nine.

A planning application submitted by Kirklees for a school on the Rawfolds site was rejected by the council's planning committee last week.

It is to be amended and re-submitted.
