A classic car show got hundreds of motoring enthusiasts revved up this weekend.

The event was staged at retro business The Carding Shed in Hepworth yesterday.

And organisers were taken by surprise at its popularity as 500 vehicles of all varieties – including a vintage helicopter – descended outside the premises.

The day raised funds for Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

Based in a former mill, the attraction offers a unique trip down memory lane to a golden era.

It is home to the I.K. Classics garage which offers vehicle restorations and race preparation facilities.

Owner Ian Kellett said the weekend’s event was one of three to be staged there this year and explained that it’s popularity had taken everyone by surprise.

He said: “We estimated that we had 500 cars of interest which was more than we ever anticipated.

“It was the first nice weekend after the snow so I think everyone was getting their cars out for a bit of a run.

“We didn’t anticipate the volume of traffic and we ran out of space.

“The helicopter – a 1968 Bell 47 – was the most unusual and came from a man in Cumberworth who also has some vintage motorcycles.

“He asked if he could come on his motorbike or fly in and we made some space for him on the show field. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the day.”

Other vintage vehicles on display included some classic American hot rods, various racing cars, tractors, coaches, an Austin wagon with a generator on the back and a Land Rover on tracks.

Other upcoming events at the venue sure to appeal to car fans are a Huddersfield Motor Club meeting on July 3 and a car rally on September 10.
