Independent police investigators are to probe a serious crash in part of Kirklees.

They are investigating reports that a car failed to stop for police and jumped a red light before ploughing into two cars at a crossroads in Cleckheaton town centre.

The incident happened shortly before 8pm on Thursday at the junction of St Peg Lane, Bradford Road, and Dewsbury Road when it appears a Peugeot 106 has travelled across the junction and struck two other cars.

Police are investigating the crash but confirmed two marked police cars were not directly behind the Peugeot 106 when it crashed and were not directly involved in the collision.

Police, fire and ambulances crews flooded the scene which brought the town centre to a virtual standstill as the crossroads were closed.

At least three vehicles were involved, including the Peugeot 106, a Citroen Picasso and a Citroen C2.

The 25-year-old male driver of the Peugeot received a broken leg and was taken to hospital for treatment while two males, both aged 22, who were passengers in the car suffered minor injures and also received hospital treatment.

All three were subsequently arrested on suspicion of burglary. The driver was also arrest on suspicion of dangerous driving.

A 24-year-old female passenger and three children from another vehicle were taken to Dewsbury District Hospital for minor injuries treatment.

One of the cars ended up crashing into railings at the King Edward VII Memorial Park. All three cars were badly damaged in the incident.

Peter Fawcett, who took dramatic photographs of the crash, said: “The whole area was sealed of for a long time by the police”.

Chief Supt Tim Kingsman, of Kirklees Police, said: “Enquiries are ongoing into this incident and as a police pursuit was declared prior to the collision taking place, a referral has been made to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Three males from the Peugeot have been arrested on suspicion of burglary.”

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance was scrambled and landed in the Memorial Park but it was not needed as a decision was made to take the casualty by road.

Cleckheaton fire crews were called to the scene and assisted with helping paramedics get into a vehicle.

Watch Commander Andrew Pullan said: “We were called and assisted in transporting a casualty on to a stretcher. He was taken to hospital by land ambulance.”

Anyone with information should call West Yorkshire’s Major Collision Enquiry Team on 101.”
