Three people have been arrested following a serious crash in Cleckheaton.

The incident happened shortly before 8pm on Thursday at the junction of St Peg Lane, Parkside, and Dewsbury Road when it appears a car has travelled across the junction and struck two other cars.

Police, fire and ambulances flooded the scene, which brought the town centre to a virtual standstill as the crossroads were closed.

A 22-year-old passenger in a Peugeot 106 was seriously injured and taken to hospital. He was subsequently arrested.

Two other men, the 26-year-old driver, and another 22-year-old passenger were also arrested on suspicion of burglary and dangerous driving.

One of the cars ended up crashing into railings at the King Edward VII Memorial Park. All three cars were badly damaged in wreckage.

Detective Jim Griffiths at Huddersfield CID said: “Three men have been arrested on suspcion of burglary and dangerous driving and enquires are ongoing.

“Three vehicles were involved. The driver of the Peugeot 106 was injured.”

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance was scrambled and landed in the memorial park but it was not needed as a decision was made to take the casualty by road.

Cleckheaton Fire Crews were called to the scene and assisted with helping paramedics access a vehicle.

Watch Commander Andrew Pullan said: “We were called and assisted in transporting a casualty on to a stretcher. He was taken to hospital by land ambulance.”

The cars involved were a Peugeot 106 and a Citroen Picasso and Citroen C2.

Anyone with information should call Dewsbury Police on 101.
