STREETS remained cordoned off three days after a mystery blast at a Kirklees factory.

The area around Scandinavia Mills, Cleckheaton, home to industrial gasket maker Flexitallic, was still a no-go area for the public yesterday following an explosion in an industrial oven.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service’s group manager, Martin Speed, said there was no further risk of explosion or fire.

An investigation into the cause of the blast in Hunsworth Lane, has now been launched by the Health and Safety Executive, with the fire service and Flexitallic managers.

The explosion happened at 8.20pm on Monday on the first-floor of an extension building. Two people were injured.

A further 13 employees were taken to hospital for check-ups.

Office and manufacturing staff in the adjacent head office returned to work as normal the following morning.

The incident team at Flexitallic is keeping local residents and businesses updated.
