A young Cleckheaton woman is 'fighting for her life' after being struck by a car in Wyke.

The incident occurred at 2.30am when a 28-year-old was involved in a collision with a Toyota Corolla while crossing the the A58 Whitehall Road close to the junction with Westfield Lane by Harry's Carvery.

The driver of the vehicle, who was travelling in the direction of Halifax, then left the scene.

The victim was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary with life-threatening injuries.

Police Constable Martin Ward, from West Yorkshire Police's Collision Investigation Unit, said: "The driver of the vehicle, a 43-year-old man from Dewsbury, later reported the incident at Dewsbury Police Station and was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop at the scene of a road accident and remains in police custody.

‘‘I am appealing to any witnesses or anyone with information in relation to this incident, which has left a young woman fighting for her life in hospital, to come forward and speak to officers.’’
