Cold toast has landed a Huddersfield care home for the elderly in hot water.

Cleveland House Nursing Home at Edgerton has been rapped for not serving breakfast at the right temperature.

Despite residents’ indifference to eating tepid toast the home for OAPs has been told it “requires improvement”.

The home is the fourth in Kirklees this year to be told its care is not up to scratch.

Inspectors generally praised the care given by nurses and care assistants at the Cleveland Road home for OAPs.

But a host of seemingly minor transgressions have left the home with a poor results in four-out-of-five categories tested by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Comments on the breakfast service for the home’s 45 residents included: “We noticed one person had buttered toast on their tray. The toast was cold.”

One content OAP said they were happy to “put up with” their toast being medium temperature.

Another resident said their breakfast in bed was “not that cold, but they were not bothered”.

Inspectors noted a good range of meal choices were available and one person commented their pudding was “very nice”.

But despite the varied menu from an in house chef and residents’ apparent tolerance of the various temperatures of their toast, the watchdog marked the home down.

The inspector said: “Not all people may be receiving their breakfast at an acceptable temperature.”

Other criticisms of the home run by private health giant Bupa, following a surprise visit in January, included: 28 out of 64 staff had not had refresher training on health and social care law for two years, while one member of staff’s references had not been checked properly.

Several other issues about paperwork were also highlighted.

A spokesman for Cleveland House home said: “The wellbeing of our residents is our absolute priority.

“We always do our best to ensure that our residents have nutritious food that they enjoy and that meals are served hot. On the very rare occasion this may occur we’re always happy to provide a fresh slice of toast or an alternative.

“The CQC inspectors recognised that our staff were caring and treated residents with dignity and respect. Also, that medicines are stored and administered safely.

“But we acted immediately and are reviewing all residents’ care plans and the activities residents can get involved in.

“All staff are completing further training in areas including manual handling and safeguarding.

“Our residents and their families have commented on the improvements and we are committed to putting in whatever resources are needed to make further progress.”
