It's a classic British film comedy.

And now a group of Calderdale musicians will take to the fore when a new stage version of Brassed Off hits the region.

The show is coming to the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, in March to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike in 1984.

And the stars will include the players of the Clifton and Lightcliffe Brass Band.

They will play the musicians from the fictional Grimley Colliery who defied the odds to ensure their music triumphed.

Brassed Off is a funny and heart-warming drama that reaches stirring heights as the band perform the final scene live on the stage of the Alhambra Theatre.

The Clifton and Lightcliffe Brass Band is based at Bailiff Bridge just outside Brighouse.

The players are led by musical director John Clay and the band qualified for the National Championships in 2006, 2007, 2010 and

again in 2012.

In January, 2013, the band was promoted to the 1st section of brass banding in this country for the first time in its history.

An Alhambra spokesman said: “Brassed Off transports audiences back to 1992. Grimley Colliery faces the threat of closure and the future of the brass band seems uncertain.

“With the miners torn between redundancy packages and the picket lines, band-leader Danny’s hopes of winning the national brass band competition seem like a distant dream.

“But the arrival of flugelhorn-playing Gloria brings hope, romance and controversy to the Yorkshire brass band on the brink of collapse in uncertain times.

“It’s passionate and inspiring – a celebration of human endeavour and community spirit in triumph against all the odds”.

The film starred the late Pete Postlethwaite and Stephen Tompkinson.

The stage version is led by highly respected and accomplished actor, John McArdle, perhaps best known for his roles in Brookside, Firm Friends and Waterloo Road.
