A MARCH to call for action on climate change will take place in Huddersfield.

Hundreds of people are expected to take to the streets to support the Stop Climate Change campaign.

The march on December 1 will bring together groups such as Huddersfield Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace and the Huddersfield Interfaith Council.

Parents, cyclists and nursery groups are also expected to join the march.

Chayley Collis from Huddersfield Friends of the Earth will be attending the march with her three-you-old son Murray. She said: “We want it to be family friendly and an event where people can come and get information about how to make a difference.

“What we are trying to do is show the MPs that people support the issue. It is something we care about and we want the forthcoming Climate Change Bill to reflect our views.

“It is urgent we act now, there is only a small window of opportunity but I think we can make a change for the better.”

Many children are expected to take part in the march and they will get the chance to meet Pete the cuddly polar bear. There will also be information stalls for people to find out more about what steps they can take to help.

Chayley Collis added: “We want people to write to their MPs, but there are lifestyle changes they can make to help.

“Installation may not sound like a big thing but people don’t realise how much electricity, and money, they could save by insulating their home more.

“Transport is another obvious issue; we just want people to think about all the alternatives and try them.”

The Climate Change Bill is expected to go through parliament in the next few months. It calls for 60 per cent cuts in CO2 emissions by 2050, but Friends of the Earth say the figure should be nearer 80 per cent.

The Stop Climate Change march will take place on Saturday, December 1, starting at 10am at St George’s Square in front of the railway station. It will finish at the Piazza where there will be stalls, activities and speakers.
