A GOLCAR councillor today vowed to fight post office closures.

Christine Iredale promised action to combat closures, announced in the latest round of shutdowns.

And Huddersfield Pensioners' Association members are to discuss the matter at their meeting next Thursday.

Ten more closures were announced by Post Office Ltd last week.

This brings the total that have either been shut, are due to be axed or are under threat in the Huddersfield area to 17.

Two of the three post offices in Golcar are under consultation and look set to close. They are James Street and Leymoor Road.

Clr Iredale, a Golcar councillor, said: "Post Office Ltd is not really concerned about the people who live in the Golcar ward.

"My ward colleagues and myself have recently been told that Cowlersley Post Office will shut on December 9 - and now we find out that two more are to go.

"Do people really matter any more?

"Do those who make these decisions realise that if these post offices close we will have only two in the entire ward - Milnsbridge and Town End - to serve 12,000 people?"
