CALDERDALE Council leader John Ford has attacked reports that 10 libraries could be closing.

Reports in other newspapers said the libraries - including those in Greetland and Stainland - could be axed to cut costs.

But Clr Ford has rubbished the reports, saying he has no idea where the claims came from.

"We are not closing any libraries. In fact, we are spending £1m on improving three in the area," he said.

"It is true that some of the libraries away from the towns can be open all day and not get one customer. But that does not mean we are closing them.

"We review provisions like libraries every year, but there are no plans in the budget to do what has been suggested.

"The buildings are old and in some cases unsuitable, for example over disabled access.

"But I am at a loss to see where this story came from. It seems no-one knows. I suspect it is someone being mischievous."
