Health services will be scattered across the area when a health centre closes.

Huddersfield’s Princess Royal Health Centre is to close after it was revealed the Greenhead Road health centre needed a £10m overhaul.

Due to investment needed at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI) – said to be a priority for Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust – they have decided to ‘disinvest’ from the Princess Royal Health Centre.

Now, after public engagement with patients, the options for relocation have been revealed.

Some services will move into Huddersfield town centre, some to HRI or Calderdale Royal Hospital and some to Halifax town centre or Salterhebble.

The town centre locations have yet to be revealed.

A report ahead of Tuesday’s Kirklees Overview and Scrutiny Panel for Well-Being and Communities reveals the future proposals.

Lesley Hill, the Trust’s Director of Planning, Performance, Estates and Facilities, said: “After a series of engagement events with our patients, their families and staff we have drawn up our suggested proposals so we can continue to provide the quality care currently based at PRCHC for our patients and their families into the future.”

As a result of the public engagement, travel and accessibility ranked highly for patients which is why town centre locations have been put forward for many services.

Locala director of transformation Jim Barwick said: “Locala is committed to providing high quality healthcare services for the people of Kirklees in the community and the suggested proposals to relocate Locala services from Princess Royal will ensure this continues.”

The centre opened in July, 1928, as the Municipal Maternity Home. The last baby was born there in 1984 and the building was then handed over to community health services.
