ENGLAND’S rugby union heroes might have timed their return to World Cup form perfectly.

But their timing could not have been worse for Huddersfield Rugby Union Club.

The club had already arranged a fundraising dinner dance for this Saturday – the night of the final.

When the date was set the organisers – like virtually everyone else – were sure the struggling England team would never get so far.

But they were cursing their luck when Brian Ashton’s side confounded expectations by beating France last Saturday to make the final against South Africa.

Dinner dance organiser Diane Beaven said: “It has been a challenge to keep our numbers up. With persuasion and the promise of a match screening we’re still expecting over 80 people.”

While the England team make their final pre-match preparations the Huddersfield club’s mums will be making curry and crumble for the event at Hepworth Village Hall.

Ingredients have been donated by Sainsbury’s and the Co-op.

Money from the event, which will be fronted by band Cactus, will help to pay for development of the club’s under-10 and under-17 squads.
