LOVE blossomed between Barry and Jean Winterbottom when they met at a dance on New Year’s Eve.

Now, 50 years later, the Outlane couple are celebrating their golden wedding.

They are pictured now and on their wedding day.

They met while on an evening out with friends at a dance in Huddersfield town centre organised by the Co-op.

They were married at St Barnabas’ Church at Crosland Moor.

Mrs Winterbottom said: “It was a lovely day, but there were gale-force winds and it was freezing cold. My husband and I got the flu two days after!”

After they were married the couple lived at Lockwood and Deighton before making their home at Weldon Drive in Outlane, where they have lived for the past 19 years.

Mrs Winterbottom worked at several mills. She later became a dinner lady at Deighton Junior School.

Mr Winterbottom was a mechanic all his working life. He trained at the Brockholes company’s garage.

After two years National Service in the Army he became a mechanic at David Brown Tractors, Meltham, before becoming self-employed.

The couple enjoy socialising at Slaithwaite Owls, where they enjoy a number of activities, including pool and bowls.

They have two children and four grandchildren.

The couple celebrated their anniversary with a meal with family and friends at The Great Wall Chinese restaurant in Brighouse.
