SCOUTS in Huddersfield took the needle out of disposing of Christmas trees.
They stepped in and ran a money-spinning collection service.
Huddersfield North Scouts picked up more than 600 trees from households around the town in return for donations.
The trees were stockpiled at a farm off New Hey Road in Rastrick and the neighbouring Badger Hill cricket ground before being recycled.
They were chipped on Sunday to be used as surfacing for a development project nearby.
District Explorer Scout Commissioner Graham Earnshaw said it was the fourth year that the Scouts had run the service.
He added: “We have had another excellent response this year; the phones have been red hot. The Scouts went out leaflet-dropping and direct mailing previous customers.
“It has been great.”
The Scouts hope to have raised about £2,700.
Cash raised after Christmas, 2007, was used to pay towards a school-building project in Nepal.
This year’s money will help pay for a Scout trip to France.
