An uplifting poetry book will help raise spirits at a local charity.

Funny and touching verses are also included in the new anthology, which has been created to boost funds for the family care team at Kirkwood Hospice.

Called Little Book of Poems, it has been made possible thanks to creator Colne Valley fundraiser Jennifer Smith-Wignall, who had asked contibutors to take part in her special project.

She was initially moved to form it following the death of her dad, who received care at the hospice.

Although originally conceived of as a print book, she decided to sell it as an e-book after seeing the success of other authors.

She said: “I was looking for a meaningful way to remember my dad when the idea for a collection of poetry came about.

“I wanted to do something that reflected him as well as us as a family and it occurred to me that he had always loved reading and had a real way with words.

“The Family Care team at Kirkwood Hospice supported my family through some difficult times and helped us to see the light at the end of the tunnel after my dad died.

“The help and support the team gave was worthwhile and I believe we should give back so they can keep up the hard and devoted work in helping others.”

Dozens of people have written poems for the book, which has been released as a digital book costing £5 each.

Jennifer, said: ““There are some truly inspirational, uplifting and heart-warming poems in the book.

“Everyone involved in putting it together hopes that readers will relate to the poems and take something positive and inspiring from the beautiful words.”
