A project to kick-start a Huddersfield to Standedge eco travel trail has notched up a gear after being given a £10,000 boost.

Colne Valley Area Committee voted to grant the money to enable a feasibility study to be undertaken into the Colne Valley Greenway project, which has not moved forward since it was first suggested by the council in 2005.

The eight-mile track is being considered as a traffic-free alternative for walkers, horse riders, anglers and cyclists after some people expressed their objection to cyclists using the Huddersfield Narrow Canal towpath.

If all requirements are met, the ambitious project, which is being steered by the area’s Environment and Transport Portfolio Group and has been estimated to cost around £250,000, would be created in stages over a few years by bidding for available grants.

Colne Valley ward councillor, Nicola Turner, believes that the project would be an economic boon to the area and hopes that, if successful, the route could eventually extend in three directions, linking the Colne Valley with north Kirklees and other areas.

Initial plans are focused on creating a route through Paddock, Milnsbridge, Linthwaite and Slaithwaite, some of which may travel along the Huddersfield narrow canal towpath.

The study will enable experts to assess whether one or more paths will need to be created to ensure safety between users of different modes of transport and whether all transport can realistically be accommodated.

They will also consider surfaces and the affect of the route on the surroundings, as well as the need for toilet and refreshment facilities.

Speed limits may also be considered to ensure that it remains safe for all to use.

The committee also voted to give £200 to fund a community consultation into the Greenway.

Clr Turner, who is behind the project said: “We are delighted that the Greenway was given this funding because it will not only help encourage sustainable travel and health and wellbeing in the area but it will also bring a lot of tourism into the Colne Valley.

“We are determined to push forward with this.”

A steering group, which includes residents, plan to hold a further meeting with the steering group in April to talk about the consultation and further funding options.
