Riders from as far as northern Scotland will be put through their paces during one of the country’s best loved – and feared – mountain bike challenges.

The 12th annual Colne Valley Mountain Bike Challenge starts and finishes in Golcar, on May 10 (from 9am).

The event offers two challenges: a hilly 30-mile slog for advanced riders and a flatter 20-mile ride for the less adventurous.

This year’s ride, which begins at Leymoor Cricket Club, will raise cash for the club and 39th Parkwood Scouts, Longwood.

The routes take in Wessenden, Deer Hill, Blackmoorfoot, Linfit, Pule Hill, Wellhouse and Bolster Moor.

So far riders from as far as Elgin, near Inverness, and Hertfordshire have signed up for the challenge.

Hundreds of seasoned mountain bikers are expected from along the M62 corridor while a number of less serious riders are expected to make up much of the local contingent.

Organiser Jonathan Brook said: “We’ve got two rides including a shorter one for anyone who wants to put their toe in the water.

“It’s good for people who want to bring their kids or if they’re coming back from an injury or are daunted by the 30-mile challenge.

“It cuts out the big hills in Marsden.

“The 30-mile challenge is for anyone who thinks they’re up to it.

“It’s a challenge; the Marsden section is tough with three pretty stiff hill climbs.

“All being well we should have some good weather.”

Entry is £17 in advance or £22 on the day. Prices include a souvenir T-shirt.
