BUSINESSES have rallied around Huddersfield’s Town Crier Vic Watson to bring a prestigious competition to Huddersfield.

Vic has organised for the 2013 British Town Crier Championships to be staged in Huddersfield – the first time the event has been staged in Yorkshire.

But with no funding from Kirklees Council he had to turn to businesses to back his fundraising. He needed just over £1,500 to put the extravaganza on in September and is now around £400 short of his target.

To boost the fundraising he will be in the stocks in Nelson Mandela Corner today, from 11am to 3pm, where people can throw wet sponges at him. He aims to be wearing a Victorian swimming suit.

And a fundraising auction will be held at the Students Union building on the Huddersfield University campus on Thursday, July 11, featuring a range of items from bed and breakfast stays to an executive box for a Huddersfield Giants game.

The championship, on Saturday, September 28, will involve 25 town criers and their wives or partners coming to Huddersfield from places as diverse as Liverpool, Bridlington, Colchester and Banbury.
