BACK in January, the Examiner teamed up with the Huddersfield Lions Club to go an extra mile for their 50th year in the town.

We asked Examiner readers to give a day of their time to get stuck into a community project.

And we called on groups and organisations to speak up and get involved.

Our idea was to match tasks with volunteers - and this week it's all come together!

Community-minded Huddersfield people were happy to offer their services.

And organisations were eager to invite a crack team along to tackle tasks.

We chose THREE deserving projects to give our help to.

The first was a list of jobs at Greenfields Community Centre, Dalton.

This big charitable organisation isn't shy in coming forward - it got involved in the Examiner's Community Chest scheme last summer and scooped £1,000 for refurbishments thanks to readers who collected tokens and voted.

The building is a base for activities that benefit hundreds of people and needed cash for the improvements.

Publicity in the paper also led to a second boost of a free carpet! A publicity-shy firm has donated a £1,600 carpet to replace grubby, well-worn flooring.

Government inspectors had told the centre it needed to smarten up its furnishings to meet regulations.

Today the Lions and their volunteers are doing some much- needed painting work at the Fresh Horizons community centre, Deighton - see a report and pictures in tomorrow's Examiner to see how everyone got on.

And our third project is refurbishment of the National Children's Centre playtrain at Huddersfield Railway Station.

But because of the cold weather we have decided to hang on for a few weeks, so that rubbing down and sanding on the platform will be a more pleasant experience for our volunteers!
