VILLAGERS are backing an appeal to raise thousands of pounds to repair a church roof.
Building work on the Grade I listed Kirkburton Parish Church will top £200,000.
The restoration appeal was launched with a fundraising concert featuring local performers. It attracted an audience of 300 and raised £1,826.
The Rev Gary Hodgson said he had been overwhelmed by the support.
"It was local people. Most of them weren't parishioners," he said.
The building still features medieval pews.
"It's very, very historic. The community feel a sense of ownership in the building."
He said the work was long overdue.
"We haven't had the resources to do anything for years. We have done a little bit of work in the vestry because when it rained the water literally just came through. It is 800 years old and you can't expect anything else. Many fundraising community events are being planned."
