A VIEW that has delighted Almondbury residents for years has vanished.

Huge horse chestnut trees that edged the village cemetery have been felled.

Kirklees Council's tree experts have had to fell a number of trees because they are diseased.

A spokesman said: "We are taking out six or seven trees for health and safety reasons.

"They are either dead, dying or diseased."

But the news has dismayed many local people.

Mrs Valerie Baillie, of Almondbury, said: "It is a terrible shame.

"The trees have been there for decades and looked beautiful when in flower.

"They have also attracted lots of children over the years, anxious to gather the conkers in the autumn."
