A MAN has been in court charged with causing the death of 90-year-old Meltham woman Connie Mitchell.

Ian Hemmings, 45, appeared at Huddersfield Magistrates' Court in a brief hearing yesterday afternoon.

Hemmings, who said he was of no fixed address, was charged with robbery and manslaughter.

He did not enter pleas to either of the charges.

Prosecutor Craig Brown said the robbery happened at 11.30am on February 27, as Mrs Mitchell was walking along Coniston Avenue in Meltham.

She was on her way home from shopping when a car reversed alongside her and her handbag was snatched.

She fell and hit her head on the pavement.

She died from head injuries in hospital on March 21.

During the hearing, Hemmings spoke only to confirm his name and details and that he did not want a solicitor.

He agreed with a prosecution request to remand him in custody while police made further inquiries.

Magistrates remanded Hemmings in custody until tomorrow, when he will appear at Dewsbury Magistrates' Court at 10am.
