Hundreds of drivers have been left stuck in queues in and around a notorious bottleneck – because traffic lights are on the blink.

Traffic is often backed up and slow-moving at Cooper Bridge near the Three Nuns pub at Mirfield.

But over the last week the route where the busy A62 Leeds Road meets the A644 Huddersfield Road has been badly snarled up.

The traffic lights have suffered technical problems following an accident , causing longer delays.

On Wednesday morning drivers took 20 minutes to get out of Mirfield with traffic bumper-to-bumper almost back to the town centre.

On Wednesday night delays at Cooper Bridge – which also leads down to Brighouse and junction 25 of the M62 – meant queues built up back along Leeds Road towards the John Smith’s Stadium.

Tailbacks were also caused along Bradley Road.

On Thursday, traffic coming out of Huddersfield was queuing back along Leeds Road and for much of the length of Bradley Road.

Frustrated motorists took to Facebook, desperate for answers.

The My Mirfield group asked: “So what is going on with the traffic at Cooper Bridge?

“In the last few days it has been worse than ever at all times of the morning and evening, not just school times and rush hour.”

On Wednesday, Anne Horvath Littlewood wrote: “It has been dreadful.

“It took me almost an hour this evening from Huddersfield town centre to Cooper Bridge roundabout. I could have walked home faster!”

Charlotte Gee said: “Thought it was just me! They are driving me crazy!”

Sin Patrick said: “I left for work a lot later than normal on Monday and the lights were out as they were being worked on.

“Used as a proper roundabout it was better without the lights.

“It took me an hour to get home to Mirfield on Wednesday and I work by the stadium. Total joke!”

Mick Ward wrote: “Lights out the other day. Treated it like a roundabout. No-one queuing. It was great. First time in ages I’ve not had to queue.”

A Kirklees Council spokesman said: “Following a road traffic collision late last week we have been experiencing serious engineering issues with the traffic signal controller at this site and we have been working with our contractors to resolve this as soon as possible.

“We are acutely aware of the congestion.

In the meantime we are monitoring and reacting as much as possible to the live traffic situations.”
