CUSTOMERS have been returning to the corner shop.

That was the claim of Holmfirth trader Andrew Bray in a week in which supermarkets bore the brunt of a food scare.

The Arctic weather which hit the area also meant many customers shopped in their own areas, rather than making a journey to a superstore.

Mr Bray, president of Holme Valley Chamber of Trade, said: The Sudan 1 dye scare has meant people have turned back to the corner shop.

"The bulk of the items that were possibly contaminated were supermarket own brands. So people have come to small shops, knowing they can buy safely.

"The bad weather of the past few days has also hindered travel.

"Again, people realised they can get what they need on the doorstep, rather than trailing to a supermarket," he added.

Mr Bray, who runs a greengrocery business in Holmfirth, said business had been brisk at many shops in villages throughout the Holme Valley.
