CORONATION Street star Shobna Gulati paid a special visit to Kirkburton.

The 38-year-old actress, who plays Sunita Parekh in the hit soap, reopened The Gallery hair studio in North Road after its refurbishment.

She said: "It looks wonderful. It is very contemporary and roomy. I would definitely have a trim here.

"I am thinking of changing my hair. I want it more like Penelope Cruz's."

Shobna, who also appeared in Victoria Wood's Dinner Ladies, joined the Street in 2001 as one of the show's first Asian characters.

"They brought me in on an arranged marriage story, which was very brave.

"Luckily, ever since I have had some great storylines.

"I hope Sunita is a positive Asian role model.

"Last year we had the first Hindu wedding on British television," she added.

Shobna even hinted that in the future Sunita and new husband Dev could be hearing the patter of tiny feet.

Gallery manager Ann-Marie Dineen, 34, of Dalton, said it was great to have a star to reopen the salon.

"We are all really pleased with the work that has been done," she said.

"Hopefully, more people will come and see our new decorations - and have a haircut as well."
