A former Huddersfield town centre bar popular with students could be taken over by a national restaurant chain.

The Cotton Factory, on the corner of King Street and Zetland Street, shut down after Hallowe’en last year.

The building, near the Kingsgate Centre opposite The Lord Wilson pub, is now being cleared out and all the fixtures and fittings are being sold off.

A poster in the window reads: “The Cotton Factory. Closing down forever.”

A source close to the owners of the premises told the Examiner that a big-name “cool” brand restaurant was set to move in, creating a high-class destination restaurant.

It is understood the chain, which has restaurants in cities such as Manchester and Newcastle, targets up-and-coming towns and cities.

The Cotton Factory had been a mainstay of the town centre pub and club scene for many years but its popularity had waned in recent times.

In 2013, the pub promoted the Ultimate Burger Challenge. Diners were invited to tackle a mountain of food which included seven burgers, two chicken breasts, two buckets of chips, onion rings and sides – all spiced with a hot chilli relish.

More recently, The Cotton Factory had been a gastropub serving authentic Italian pizzas. It also had a cocktail lounge and music venue.

The source said work was due to start imminently and the new restaurant could be open mid-late summer.

The source declined to name the chain involved but said he hoped it would help revitalise the night-time economy and bring more people back into town.

In October when we revealed plans for Kingsgate shopping centre itself, we asked you to vote for the restaurants you would like to see in Huddersfield.

We asked you to vote for which restaurants gave you 33 popular restaurants to choose from and asked you to pick six and rate them in order of preference - and we had more than 750 votes
