A nightclub boss wants to open his Huddersfield town centre venue until 6am.

The Camel Club in Huddersfield also wants to be allowed to sell alcohol until 5am five days a week.

It would mean extending its opening hours from its current permitted hours of 4am closing.

But the Byram Court club’s bid, made by David Biddle, has been met by opposition.

Clr Julie Stewart Turner, whose Newsome ward covers Huddersfield town centre, said she believes that anti-social behaviour would become a problem if the extension were granted.

In his application, Mr Biddle says: “I would like to extend our licensing hours to 5am for the sale of alcohol and 6am for entertainment and dancing to cover us for occasional special events ... and to minimise the risk of antisocial behaviour by letting people leave in small sporadic groups at the weekend when we are very busy.

“We still plans to close at 4am on most nights but are applying for this as a safety net to prevent problems occurring on our very busy nights.”

He adds that they believe they will minimise the anti-social behaviour risk by allowing people to leave “in their own time instead of letting 400 people out onto the street all at once when problems often arise at taxi ranks/fast food restaurants”.

He added: “When we have opened until 6am with a temp event licence people have always left in dribs and drabs.”

But not everyone is convinced longer opening is a good idea.

Clr Stewart-Turner said: “I am not comfortable with the Camel Club being licensed to sell alcohol till 5am and provide entertainment till 6am, I think 4am is quite late enough.

“We have had many problems in this area for many years and  generally the Camel Club staff have been very good at working with partners to combat the anti-social behaviour, but I feel that extending the hours could enhance the challenges facing us all.”

Members of Kirklees Council’s Licensing Panel will rule on the longer opening hours on Friday at 10.45am at Huddersfield Town Hall.
