Changes to special education needs provision are being proposed.

Kirklees Council's Cabinet backed a consultation that could see provision for children with autism at Moldgreen Community Primary end and it be relocated to Kirkheaton Primary School.

The council will also look at the existing specialist provision at Flatts Nursery School, Thornhill Junior and Infant School, Rawthorpe St James (CE) VC I&N School and Rawthorpe Junior School.

Kirklees Council has been looking at where there is a need and whether provision is currently in the right place.

Clr Shabir Pandor, Cabinet member for Schools, said: “There has been a mismatch of supply and demand.

“There will be a statutory consultation in March and hopefully we get positive feedback, and any feedback we will try to address issues raised.”

It is likely that a dedicated base for children with autism will be added to Kirkheaton Primary School, which would involve an expansion of the existing school building.

It’s likely to have 10 places for children, which is the same as Moldgreen has.

The provision for children with speech, language and communication needs at Flatts Nursery School, Dewsbury, could be relocated to Thornhill Junior and Infant School, which already has a dedicated specialist provision for children with speech language and communication needs.

Staff currently at Flats Nursery will be relocated.

Plus the council will consult on plans to reduce the number of transitional places for children with physical impairments at Rawthorpe St James (CE) VC I&N School and Rawthorpe Junior School.

The places will reduce, likely to five across both schools instead of 16.

A non-statutory consultation will get underway in January, a formal consultation in March and a decision made by April ahead of it coming into force in September.
