KIRKLEES Council admits it is failing to keep up with vandalism and litter at a site in New Mill.

Youths and "idiots" are being blamed for throwing around rubbish and newspapers near the recycling site containers at the New Mill car park off Holmfirth Road.

Officers from the council's environmental waste and transport team increased the frequency of cleaning at the site from one to three times a week, several months ago after complaints.

Residents said they were fed up with litter being strewn around, the toilets being damaged and graffiti sprayed on the recycling containers.

The council's area manager Des Wilkins said it was well aware of the problem.

"It is an extremely difficult situation," he said.

"These idiots just want to cause as much damage and distress to local people and it is a shame for those who take the time and trouble to use the recycling facility."

Mr Wilkins said limited resources made it impossible to keep up with cleaning at individual sites.

He said a new programme was in place to upgrade the recycling containers.
