A KIRKLEES school given a damning report by school inspectors looks set to shut.

Councillors decided yesterday to start legal proceedings proposing the closure of Grylls Community Middle School in Liversedge next September.

An Ofsted report earlier this year described the school's teaching as "inadequate" and its financial situation "desperate".

As a result Grylls was placed in special measures. This meant it was given a year to improve significantly or face closure.

Clr Jim Dodds, the Cabinet member responsible for schools, said: "While the inspection highlighted some good points and strengths, it also emphasised the serious problems at the school which cannot be turned round within 12 months."

Kirklees Council's Cabinet also authorised a consultation on education in Liversedge yesterday.

Clr Dodds said: "The education interests of the children are of paramount importance and number of options will be explored with everyone concerned to make sure we secure the best possible schooling for children in the area.

"We will continue to work closely with staff and parents to ensure children currently in the school receive close support through this difficult period."
