A DILAPIDATED town centre building will be improved, a councillor promised last night.

Almondbury Lib Dem Clr Linda Wilkinson challenged the ruling Labour Cabinet about the state of the Co-operative building on New Street.

Speaking at last night’s monthly meeting of Kirklees Council, she asked Clr Peter McBride to make sure the building was repaired.

Clr Wilkinson said: “Cleaning up the canopy and replacing the broken windows would go a long way. Will you do that?”

Clr McBride, Cabinet member for regeneration, replied: “I promise action will be taken on that.”

But the Dalton Labour man told the meeting that the building was unlikely to be occupied in the near future.

He said: “We’re acutely aware of this eyesore. We can’t make action happen unless we have the resources – which we don’t.”
