A leading Kirklees councillor has appealed for calm in the wake of terror arrests in Batley.

A man and a woman from Batley arrested on suspicion of fundraising for terrorism have been released on bail pending further enquiries.

The 55-year-old woman and the man, aged 44, were held along with two men from Sheffield. One of those from Sheffield has been released while the other remained in custody.

Properties in Batley and Dewsbury were also searched yesterday.

Clr Shabir Pandor, Kirklees councillor for Batley West and Cabinet member for learning and skills, said: “What has happened is quite devastating and very serious.

“People need to stay vigilant, balanced and measured. Let’s work on the positives that we have developed over the years.

“We need to stay calm. If anyone does see something suspicious they need to contact the police straight away. Any form of extremism is wrong. Every religion preaches peace.”

Clr Pandor called for “leadership from the council, the community and the police to make sure our younger generation is well-educated and well-informed.”
