A VICTIM of crime has asked a Kirklees councillor for more support.

Clr Julie Stewart Turner received the Councillor Call for Action from a family who have been witness to and victims of persistent and ongoing crime.

The CCfA aims to give victims of crime and antisocial behaviour more support if the joint partnerships put in place to help them fail.

The call is only referred to scrutiny for backing if the ward councillor is unable to resolve the issue.

It is the first CCfA Clr Stewart Turner (pictured) has dealt with.

She said: “It is difficult to say anything about the individual case because I want to ensure the family are protected.

“But as a councillor we have these powers to help our constituents and this is what the call is about.

“I’ve spent a long time chasing round different agencies getting them to work together on this case, but it’s just not working for this family.

“I hope the CCfA will give them more support.”

The ward member for Newsome added that councillors were committed to using the extra power given to them to help residents when they believe it would benefit those affected.

The call will go before members on the Overview and Scrutiny Management Committee today and Clr Stewart Turned hopes to get their backing.

“I cannot pre-empt what the committee will do, but I hope they will see this case and give all their support,” she added.

The CCfA aims to tackle the perceived lack of effective support and lack of communication in dealing with victims of crime.

It has been operational in Huddersfield north and south since February, with Kirklees being the first authority to introduce the scheme.
