COUNCILLORS have united to demand towns are kept together.

Last month the Boundary Commission announced a shake-up of parliamentary constituency boundaries.

The plan involves dividing both the existing Dewsbury and Batley and Spen constituencies, even though both have electorates within new guidelines.

Labour, Lib Dem and Conservative councillors united to back a motion condemning the plan at this week’s Kirklees Council meeting.

Kirklees leader Clr Mehboob Khan said: “We strongly oppose these changes.

“It makes no sense for Batley and Dewsbury to be linked with Wakefield and Leeds.”
