MORE than 1,170 people attended ward forums in Calderdale, figures show.

And councillors will next week review how they meet with the wider public in their wards.

The council’s Communities Scrutiny Panel decided to include a review of ward forums to assess their operation, cost and effectiveness.

Research shows that throughout the borough 1,175 residents attended, with 298 taking part in a survey.

All but 9 of them agreed the meetings were informative and 288 had a chance to express their views.

A report, to be presented to councillors, says: “Many issues have been resolved around bulky waste removal and incidents of fly tipping, cutting back of vegetation obstructing footpaths and road signage.

“Other actions have included the installation of the welcome to Stainland sign, repair of a community notice board, and various clean-ups, such as Church Lane Stainland.”

In 2010, a review got under way after figures showed the Lower Valley, which covers Brighouse, Rastrick and Elland, spent £98,028 on four ward forums in the past year, which had an average of 23 people attending.

A report said cost was not financially viable, but some of the ward forums have merged with the Police and Communities Together (PACT) meetings since.

On Thursday members will be asked to consider making any possible further recommendations, including any on the future operation of the Ward Forums.
