Three cricket clubs could be bowled over when councillors consider a £38,000 boost for community projects.

The Area Committee for Mirfield, Denby Dale and Kirkburton will rule on funding for five sports projects.

Upper Hopton Cricket Club in Mirfield is seeking £10,000 for the re-development of a cricket practice area.

They want help funding repairs to an area damaged when heavy rain caused a landslip, a retaining wall is to be built around the practice pitch and the £10,000 will fund groundworks.

Hopton Mills Cricket Club could be in line for £5,692.80 for a new spike-proof clubhouse floor.

Club members have secured funding for some improvements but face a shortfall to complete the work.

They are doing much of the work themselves, but they need a cash boost to buy materials.

Council papers say: “The project will aid in the Area Committees safer communities theme by providing opportunities for constructive, supervised play and sports participation, occupying the minds of the young people in Mirfield.”

While Kirkburton Cricket Club is hoping for a £2,725 boost for the replacement of non-turf pitch.

Pennine Canoe Club is looking for £7,000 for new storage.

Their overall project to increase participation and access to the water is aiming to raise £49,500 and the £7,000 will buy storage for water sports equipment for the work they do on the River Calder.

Shelley Community Football Club is hoping for a £12,000 boost to fund major improvements totalling £63,400 for work at the Storthes Hall site.

Councillors will decide the grant funding when they meet tonight, , at 7pm and Battyeford Sport Centre, Huddersfield Road, Mirfield.

The meeting also includes an update on the Tour de France and residents can speak to councillors.
