Councillors will have to rule on proposed parking restrictions in Longwood.

Kirklees Council plans to extend Keep Clear markings on Greenhill Road and introduce waiting restrictions on Lamb Hall Road, Gilead Road and Greenhill Road.

It will mean cars will be restricted from parking up to 18m from the junction of the Dusty Miller pub, the first 16m of Lamb Hall Road will be out of bounds along with 12m of Greenhill Road in two locations.

But the proposal has divided residents so Kirklees Cabinet will rule on the Traffic Regulation Order.

Council papers say: “A scheme has been developed to manage parking on Lamb Hall Road, Gilead Road, Greenhill Road, Longwood, following numerous complaints of inconsiderate and, at times, illegal parking on street by residents and customers of the local public house.

“Vehicles were observed parking at junctions, which severely compromised sight lines and vehicular movements.

“The majority of properties in this area have little or no off street parking facilities and the demand for on street parking space is high.

“With the increasing number of cars that are being parked on the road today, drivers are more willing to leave their cars in unsuitable locations and often against the advice of the Highway Code, because they have nowhere else to leave them.”

All three ward councillors – Labour’s Hilary Richards and Lib Dem’s Christine Iredale and Andrew Marchington – are in support of the proposal. Clr Marchington said the “benefit to road safety outweighs any inconvenience caused to residents”.

However, Kirklees has received two formal objections to the proposal.

Longwood resident John Ramsden said it could lead to excessive speeding on Gilead Road and Greenhill Road and said it would reduce parking from seven to four vehicles, while Lucy Tootell raised concerns about displaced vehicles and a lack of parking provision.

Kirklees responded to the objections, saying: “Whilst the Council appreciates the need for residents to park, the primary purpose of the adopted highway is the passing and re-passing of traffic. The proposed restrictions are to remove parking that is prohibiting the safe turning manoeuvres at this junction, especially HGV’s that are forced to drive over kerbs, putting pedestrians at risk.”

One resident, Craig Watson, is in support of the proposal.

Kirklees officers recommend approval but members of the Cabinet Local Issues Committee will meet on Wednesday at 12.30pm at Crown Court Buildings to rule on it.
