The clock is ticking to Huddersfield’s very own version of the iconic TV game show Countdown.

For the last two years Huddersfield has hosted the words and numbers quiz and competitors are being invited back for more.

Countdown, a Channel 4 hit for 30 years, has a cult following among game show fans who want a taste of the action for themselves.

Organised by Jeff Clayton, 29, and James Robinson, 26, the Countdown roadshows have proved popular, and this year’s event will be held at Town’s PPG Canalside complex in Leeds Road, Huddersfield, on Saturday, November 15.

Anyone can enter and players take to the virtual set to pit themselves against the clock – and each other. All ages are welcome.

There are heats through the day culminating with a grand final to crown an overall champion.

Jeff and James are both previous winners on the show and Jeff has organised the unofficial tournaments all over the UK, often to raise money for charity.

The format is similar to the TV original and Jeff said: “We get everyone involved and play the games as live.

“The aim is always to entertain and inform and it’s all the better for getting people involved. Everyone gets a chance to pick the letters and numbers.

“These events consistently appeal to all sorts of fans, even those who would never set foot in a studio but don’t mind this for a piece of fun on a weekend.

“It’s a very social event and there is plenty of time across the day to stop for a cuppa – and then have something stronger afterwards.”

Big Town fan James, who lives in Mirfield, added: “We ran this particular event for the first time in 2012 and it drew 30 people from as far afield as London and Glasgow.

“We don’t run these events for profit but everyone knows Countdown and we’re confident that with its popular appeal we can build on our previous successes.

“And, as a nod to my team, the virtual Countdown set that you’ll see on the big screen uses Town’s blue and white colours for the background.”

James first appeared on Countdown aged 14 with legendary host Richard Whiteley. He has also reached the final of BBC quiz Pointless and last year appeared on Mastermind with Town as his specialist subject.

Admission costs £15 per person and includes tea or coffee on arrival and a buffet lunch. A cash bar will be open during the day.

Doors open at 9am for a 10am start and everyone plays six matches. Trophies are handed out at 6pm.
