A HUDDERSFIELD accountant has become the latest contestant to be beaten by a Countdown conundrum and his opponent.

Chris Marshall featured on the popular Channel 4 TV show yesterday for the show’s quarter-final.

He had earned his place after an unbeaten run of eight shows, before going head to head with the number two seed.

But he was thrashed by competitor David Barnard who scored 108 points, to Chris’s 63.

Chris said: “I found it tough to play against David as he was in great form and three or four of the words he came up with I would not have seen in 30 minutes, yet alone 30 seconds because they were so obscure.

“I was looking for a nine towards the end to try and get some points back but other than that I felt I performed to my full potential.”

The pair both failed to get the final conundrum and show host Nick Hewer told the pair they had been ‘foxed and out witted’, before revealing hidden word ‘epicentre’.

Hewer, who is Lord Alan Sugar’s sidekick on The Apprentice, told David he was a ‘worthy winner’ before presenting Chris with a coveted Countdown Tea Pot, glass paper weight and Oxford English Dictionary.

Chris, who works at the Wheawill and Sudworth accountants at Westgate, said David performed ‘in a different class’ to him, and wished him well for the semi-final.
