A HUDDERSFIELD couple celebrated 50 years of marriage by renewing their wedding vows.

Noleen and John Doyle, of Coule Royd, Dalton, celebrated their golden wedding on July 31.

They renewed their vows at St Paul’s Methodist Church at Moldgreen a few days later.

Friends and family travelled from the couple’s home city of Dublin for the service and one of their grandchildren, 11-year-old Sophie, acted as bridesmaid.

Mr and Mrs Doyle met at a dance hall in Dublin and travelled to Huddersfield to look for work.

Mr Doyle, 69, got a job at Brook Motors and a year later, in 1958, the couple made a brief visit home to Ireland to have their wedding.

Mr Doyle later went on to work as a machine operator at Holsets for 29 years, until retiring.

Mrs Doyle, 70, worked at a variety of jobs in Huddersfield, including a period at Anderson's leather factory and on the buses.

She also brought up the couple’s two sons, John and Christopher, who both live in Dalton.

Mrs Doyle said the renewal ceremony had been a grander affair than their original wedding.

She said: “It was not the same as our wedding day because then we didn’t have tuppence!

“The vicar and his wife did us a wonderful service and we want to thank our friends and family who came from Ireland to be with us on such a special day.”
