A CAR towing a caravan overturned on the M62 near Huddersfield, trapping its occupants.

Two people were rescued after the driver of a Kia Sportage lost control on the eastbound carriageway just before the junction 23 slip road at Outlane.

The smash left a middle-aged man and woman stuck in the front seats of the vehicle.

Fire crews from Halifax and Elland were sent to rescue them, but they were released through the rear of the 4x4 car by ambulance workers.

The 3pm accident caused police to close the entire eastbound carriageway to allow the Yorkshire Air Ambulance to land. The victims were taken to Leeds General Infirmary, but last night their injuries were not thought to be life threatening.

Firefighters helped at the scene by pulling the large vehicle and caravan to the side of the motorway.

They also cleaned up a diesel spillage on the carriageway.

The motorway was closed until 5pm causing a 20-mile tailback towards Manchester.

The incident also caused delays back to Brighouse on the westbound side as people slowed to look at the scene.

Just over an hour later M62 users were dealt a second blow when another smash caused the road to be closed again. At 6.10pm a lorry and two cars collided near junction 24 at Ainley Top, again blocking the eastbound carriageway.

No-one was thought to be injured but a vehicle was stranded in the middle lane. Queues snaked back to junction 22 at Rishworth Moor.
