A KIND-HEARTED New Mill couple celebrated 50 years of marriage by raising money for a children's charity.

Geoff and Joan Preston asked people to give money to the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust, which is raising money to build a children's hospice in the Kirklees or Calderdale areas.

The couple held an open house for about 100 guests at their home in Moor Fold and raised £350.

Mr Preston, 74, said: "We did a similar thing on my 70th birthday and raised about £100 for the trust then."

Mr Preston is a founder member and former chairman of Holmfirth Tennis Club, which formed almost 40 years ago. He still plays the game and has been secretary of Huddersfield Junior Tennis League for the last eight years.

The couple met when they worked at the former Holliday Dyes and Chemicals on Leeds Road, Deighton, shortly after the Second World War.

Mr Preston spent his National Service as a medical laboratory assistant in the Navy. He returned to Hollidays, before joining Brook Motors. He later went to Holset Engineering.

The couple have three daughters, a son and seven grandchildren.

Mrs Preston worked at Wooldale Playgroup in the 1970s and 1980s.
