A CRASH caused massive tailbacks on the foggy M62 early today.

A lorry lost its load on the westbound carriageway close to Scammonden Dam at 5.45am.

Tailbacks quickly formed and and as traffic was backing up, a white van smashed into the back of a lorry laden with steel just after junction 23 at Outlane.

A fire service spokesman said: "It seems the van driver saw the lorry at the last moment.

"Steel was protruding from the back of the lorry and the van driver swerved.

"The steel smashed through the passenger compartment in the van, but luckily no-one was sitting there."

The smash closed two lanes and caused tailbacks stretching several miles.

Neither driver was hurt.
