A COUPLE were badly hurt and trapped in their wrecked car after a smash on the M62.

They were in a Renault Clio which careered into a barrier next to the hard shoulder on the westbound carriageway between junction 22 at Ripponden and 21 at Milnrow just before 7pm last night.

The car smashed through the barrier and ended up on a grass verge.

Ambulance crews and firefighters from both West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester went to the scene, about a mile down the hill from the Ripponden turn-off.

The couple's conditions were stabilised and firefighters then cut the roof off so they could be gently lifted free.

They remained conscious throughout their ordeal.

Crew Manager Frank Van Rooyen, from Elland fire station, said: "The crash barrier seemed to have failed and the car was so badly damaged it was virtually unrecognisable."

The couple, who come from Rochdale, were taken to hospital with injuries that were serious, but not life-threatening.
