A man suffered serious head injuries after a lorry and four cars crashed near Dewsbury District Hospital.

Six police cars, two fire engines and two ambulances were called to Halifax Road near the junction with Hillhead Road, Dewsbury at around 2.42pm today.

Witnesses on the scene told how three people were trapped.

It is understood the lorry was heading down the hill towards Dewsbury town centre when the accident happened.

The crash caused a Mini Cooper car to become embedded in a wall and a telegraph pole and a road sign have also been demolished.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service told how one male casualty was taken by ambulance to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield having suffered a serious head injury.

Firefighter Chris Stenson of Dewsbury Fire Station, said: “Everyone was out of the vehicles as we arrived. The lorry driver was treated for head injuries.

“A female driver was treated for shock and sent to hospital to be checked over. We made all vehicles safe and police were managing the scene.”

The vehicles involved are said to be a silver Vauxhall Astra, a grey Mini Cooper. a grey BMW and a red Ford Focus.

Police closed the road to allow emergency services to the scene which is causing severe traffic disruption in the area.
