THE start of a winter crime crackdown across West Yorkshire netted 400 arrests last week.

The action days - which included arrests in Huddersfield, Calderdale and Dewsbury - kicked off the new blitz against criminals in the run-up to Christmas.

Hundreds of officers took part in the week of action, targeting priority crimes such as burglary, robbery and vehicle crime.

Throughout this time, co-ordinated arrests, checks on vehicles and high profile policing operations worked to disrupt criminal activity and find prolific offenders.

Target teams searched 1,200 premises and made more than 400 arrests across the county for offences including burglary, conspiracy, drug trafficking and aggravated vehicle taking.

More than 65 arrests were made during planned operations. Of these, 49 offenders have already been charged.

Officers have recovered 22 stolen cars and seized a further 159 vehicles. Many were being shared by criminals and used to commit offences.

Several high performance vehicles were also seized after keys were taken from burglaries in West Yorkshire.

These included a VW Golf, a BMW and a Mercedes.

Assistant Chief Constable Grahame Maxwell, who led the initiative, said: "This operation has proved hugely successful and we are delighted with the results.

"Arrests across the county have had an impact on the number of offences committed and many divisions have seen a significant reduction in the number of robberies and burglaries reported."

He added: "This week of action shows our determination to tackle priority crime and the lengths we will go to target those we feel are responsible.

"Criminals in West Yorkshire should be under no illusions because this is not all we have planned.

"If they don't want to see in the New Year behind bars then we'd strongly recommend a crime-free Christmas."
